American Red Cross Programs to Be Offered in June

The department of University Recreation will be offering American Red Cross First Aid, Adult CPR and AED certification opportunity on Thursday, June 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This program is designed to help people lead safer and healthier lives, as well as enhance preparedness in homes, schools, and workplaces.

In addition to choking rescue and one-rescuer CPR, students will learn how to treat cuts, bruises, bone and muscle injuries, shock, bleeding and other first aid emergencies. Students will also learn how to operate an automated external defibrillator (AED). This course meets OSHA guidelines for the workplace.

Upon successful completion, students receive American Red Cross certificates for Adult CPR, Adult First Aid, and AED (valid for two years). Cost for either session is $65 for U of A students and $75 for non-U of A students.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification will also be offered June 14-17. This course teaches participants surveillance skills to help recognize and prevent injuries, rescue skills on land and water, First Aid/CPR for Lifeguards, and professional responsibilities. Lifeguard Certification participants must be 15 years of age, and must pass a pre-course swim test. Cost is $200 for U of A students, and $250 for non-U of A students.

These classes are open to members of the public. Participants do not need to be affiliated with the University of Arkansas to register and attend. Participants must register in person at the University Recreation membership office in HPER 225. The UREC membership office is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
