Commitment to improving personal wellness not only feels good, but can make the entire University of Arkansas community an even better place to live, work, and play. This semester, take advantage of some of these free or low-cost opportunities that University Recreation offers right here on campus to help you achieve your wellness goals. The following programs are open to the entire campus community, and do not require UREC memberships.

Nutrition education and weight management are essential aspects of health and wellness. University Recreation is teaming up with Fayetteville nutrition to offer a program designed to celebrate healthy lifestyle habits and share success. It consists of wellness profile completion, weekly weigh-ins, and nutrition seminars to maximize health and weight loss goals. Nutrition seminar topics include: protein, fiber, breakfast, snacking, hydration, shopping, portion control, digestive health, and dining out. The program meets from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday evenings between September 19 and October 31 in the Arkansas Union. Registration costs $10, and participants are eligible to win UREC Small Group Training Sessions.

Add some activity to your workday or class schedule with a 30-minute campus walk led by University Recreation staff. Walks will depart from the UREC Fitness Center in the Arkansas Union at 12:15 p.m. beginning Tuesday, September 18 through Tuesday, October 9. Walks will stay on campus and take advantage of beautiful Northwest Arkansas fall weather. Snacks and water will be available. There is no cost to join and no registration process.

University Recreation staff can make a presentation to your group about Wellness, Exercise, Nutrition, or other health topics of your choice. Examples include: incorporating activity into the workday, healthy nutrition and recipe ideas, and what you need to know when starting an exercise plan. Presentations can be customized for your group, and are ideal for classes, residence halls, Greek houses, or office meetings. To request a presentation, visit the UREC Traveling Trainer webpage at http://urec.uark.edu/7966.htm and complete the Traveling Trainer online request form located at the bottom of the page.

If exercising in UREC facilities is your activity of choice, UREC offers students and members free access to certified personal trainers who can answer your questions, suggest exercises, and help you utilize equipment. Trainers are available in the UREC Fitness Center in the Arkansas Union on Monday evenings from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., and in the Donna Axum Fitness Center in the HPER Building on Tuesday evenings from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. They are trained to answer your questions and help you get the most out of your commitment to exercise, so please don’t hesitate to ask.

University Recreation wishes you a healthy and productive school year. For questions regarding these or any other University Recreation program, contact Katie Helms at khelms@uark.edu or 575-4684.
