FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Newswire email is the primary source of news for the University of Arkansas campus. Academic departments, student organizations and other campus units are encouraged to add news to Arkansas Newswire whenever they have announcements of interest to the campus community.

All faculty, staff and student accounts are automatically subscribed to the Arkansas Newswire email, but people outside campus – including news media – who ask to subscribe also receive the news headlines. The email is distributed early each weekday, a time chosen by most students as the preferred distribution time in an ASG survey.

For a detailed explanation of the submission process for Newswire stories or U of A Calendar events, download a Newswire Explainer PDF.

Articles may be submitted via online submission form found at the upper right of news.uark.edu. They can be used to announce upcoming events, to publicize recent honors or provide information to the campus. Faculty, staff and students may submit notices to either or both about campus news. The university reserves the right to refuse publication.

Story Submission

A submitted story should be written in a narrative format with full sentences and paragraphs. The submission form also allows upload of a photo and caption to accompany the story, contact information that will be published with the story and a field to add the name of a related website and its online address.

“We recommend that story submissions be made by no later than noon the day before the submission is to be published,” said Charlie Alison, editor of the Arkansas Newswire. “We do review each submission before it is published. We first look to see whether the submission is directly related to campus and the mission of the university, but then we also look through the story for any typographical errors or questions we might have, such was whether the submitter remembered to add the time of an event. The noon deadline gives us a chance to check any questions such as that.”

The person submitting the story can choose which day the story will publish as well as a removal day, if one is desired. Story submissions run just once in the daily Arkansas Newswire email, but the story will remain on the Arkansas Newswire website unless a removal date is added.

Event Submission

Adding an event to the University Calendar requires that the event occur at a definite time and date. Submissions to the University of Arkansas calendar also have an approval process, but it sometimes takes longer than a day. The submission form at the Arkansas Newswire website automatically check-marks the Newswire category. Any event that has the Newswire category check-marked will appear in the Arkansas Newswire email on the three days leading up to the event.

The event submission form does have limits on the amount of text and size of images that can be used. A document such as a PDF flier can also be attached.

“To publicize events, I recommend that organizations submit both a story and a calendar listing. Submit the story ahead of the event, especially in cases when an RSVP or registration is required, and then post of the event on the university calendar,” Alison said. “That gives people a chance to plan for the event and then another reminder just before the event.”

Outside Campus

The Arkansas Newswire also carries stories and media releases about the university that are produced by the office of university relations. These stories are meant to be read by both the campus community and the wider audience beyond the campus borders.

Academic communicators in the various colleges, schools and administrative units use Arkansas Newswire to inform the campus about its successes, but those stories are also used to promote the research, innovation and creativity of University of Arkansas students and faculty to the outside world.

In addition to the daily email and website, the Arkansas Newswire is available via RSS feeds, with subscriptions available for news about Students, Faculty and Staff, Research & Innovation, and Events, or you can create a custom feed for colleges, schools or specific topics. The Arkansas Newswire can also be followed on Twitter at @arknewswire.
