Alumnus to Lead Center for Multicultural and Diversity Education

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – John P. Jones, a University of Arkansas alumnus, has been named the new director of the Center for Multicultural and Diversity Education. The center, a part of the university’s office of diversity affairs, offers a cultural environment that celebrates unity and inclusiveness through community outreach, scholarship and mentoring.

Jones will report to Charles Robinson, vice provost for diversity affairs. His first day is Monday, Sept. 17.

“We are thrilled to welcome John to the diversity affairs team,” said Robinson. “We had a competitive pool of candidates, and we were looking for the person who was most prepared to take the Arkansas student experience to the next level. Jones has a deep understanding of our students’ needs and expectations, and I look forward to working with him and all of the center’s staff members to build upon the already exceptional programs and services available to the entire student body.”

Since June 2011, Jones has served the university as the coordinator of traditional commuter programs. There, he provided guidance to students to ensure their success living off-campus. He created programs and collaborated with student government and various off-campus organizations in the interest of commuter students. Additionally, Jones oversaw the department’s technology and communications efforts. Previously, Jones worked as a camp coordinator for the Restore Community Development Corp. in Fayetteville. 

“As an undergraduate student, the then-named Multicultural Center played a critical role in my academic success and individual growth and development,” said Jones. “I am excited to have the opportunity to make similar contributions by working to provide the necessary resources and support for students from diverse backgrounds to achieve their educational goals.”

In addition to his service to the university as a staff member, Jones is extensively involved as a volunteer on campus and in the community. He is a member of the Division of Student Affairs Communication and Collaboration Committee, the Northwest Arkansas Housing Coalition and the Safe Ride Committee. Jones has also served as a Silas Hunt Scholarship mentor, a member of the Silas Hunt Legacy Awards Selection Committee and as a co-chair of the university’s MLK Committee. He is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the American College Personnel Association.

Jones holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s degree in higher education from the University of Arkansas. As a student, Jones was a Silas Hunt Distinguished Scholar and a recipient of the Arkansas Academy of Mechanical Engineers Scholarship.
