German Graduate Student Presenting on Thomas Mann at California State University
Chris Harvey, a Master of Arts candidate in German, will present his paper “Fate and Desire in Thomas Mann’s Death in Venice” at the conference: "100 Years of Death and Judgement."
The conference, which takes place at California State University in Long Beach on Sept. 21-22, will be opened by the consul general of the Federal Republic of Germany and will include presenters from across the country. Thomas Mann won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929 and fled the National Socialist regime for America; he became a United States citizen in 1943.
Jennifer Hoyer, German graduate adviser, said: “We are so pleased that Chris's interest and work on one of the most important authors of the 20th century is a part of this conference. He will be presenting his work and representing the U of A at a gathering that includes significant Humanities and German studies scholars and German dignitaries. This is tremendous recognition, and we are extremely proud of him.”
