Visiting Artist to Lecture as Part of 'Tenses of Landscape' Exhibition

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Guest artist Claire Sherman will present a lecture at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, in room 213 of the Fine Arts Center. The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception for the artist will take place before the lecture at 5:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Gallery.
Sherman’s paintings do not seek to portray a specific view or experience; they instead present a medley of imagery eliminating the desire to identify an actual place. While addressing the ubiquity of imagery commonly associated with the genre of landscape, her work abolishes a sense of particularity. Tragedy, romanticism and ambivalence linger, transporting the viewer into an unstable world.
Sherman is currently participating in the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Workspace residency and has completed residencies at Yaddo, the Terra Foundation for American Art, the MacDowell Colony and the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation.
Recent exhibitions include solo shows at Kavi Gupta Gallery, Chicago; DCKT Gallery, New York; Houldsworth Gallery, London; Aurobora Press, San Francisco; and Hof and Huyser Gallery, Amsterdam. Recent press includes: The New York Times, Art Ltd., Art Agenda, Huffington Post, The Chicago Tribune, Flash Art, Time Out Chicago, The Sunday Times (London), New American Painting, New City, Artinfo.com, and Re-title.com.
Sherman is an assistant professor of Art at Drew University in New Jersey and is represented by Kavi Gupta Gallery in Chicago. She earned a bachelor of art from the University of Pennsylvania and a master of fine arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work is included in the Tenses of Landscape exhibition in the Fine Arts Gallery through Sunday, Nov. 4.

Parking is available in the Stadium Drive Parking Facility, where parking is free after 5 p.m. Entrance to the parking facility is on Stadium Drive, and the facility’s elevator will take patrons to street level directly across from the Fine Arts Center.
