Cricket Club competing in South Central Championship

The University of Arkansas Cricket Club has only been in existence for a little over 15 months. Though cricket as a sport has been played in the Northwest Arkansas region for over a decade now, it was not affiliated with the university before summer 2011.

Since its start, the Cricket Club has held regular practices, internal tournaments and has participated in the annual Northwest Arkansas Cricket Championships in Bentonville. On Oct. 12, the Cricket Club traveled to Jonesboro, Ark., to participate in the three-team South Central Championship of the American College Cricket Association.

That tournament marked the first foray into college cricket for the Cricket Club. This was also the first time that the players, who normally play with modified rules in softball fields with softer baseballs, actually played in a proper oval shaped field with a hard ball and proper gear and equipment.

Although the team lost both games to Arkansas State and University of Memphis it was still a great experience for them. The Cricket Club has proven to be a great addition to the University Recreation Club Sports program.

The Cricket club practices Fridays from 7-11 p.m. at Gary Hampton Softball Complex. For more information contact the club at cricket@uark.edu or 'like' them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/uacricket.
