Update Browser or Download Java 7 Patch

The IT Services Security Team strongly recommends users update web browsers to the latest version, or apply an important Java 7 security patch at http://www.oracle.com/technetwork.

To apply the patch: Windows users, click the download link for your version ending in .exe, and Mac users, click the download link ending in .dmg. Once the file is downloaded, double-click to open, and follow the wizard to install the patch.

The Java 7 patch does not apply to Chrome on a Mac, but all other browsers that have not been updated could be vulnerable depending on the version of Java currently installed. Go to www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp and click "Do I have Java?" to find out what version your web browser is using.

Updating your web browser or installing the Java 7 patch fixes a vulnerability that could allow attackers to access a user's computer remotely through malicious web pages. Once applied, the patch changes the Java security settings to High, requiring users to accept to run Java applications. IT Services recommends that users only accept Java applications that are familiar and safe, such as secure University of Arkansas web applications.

Because many web applications at the University of Arkansas require Java, the IT Services Security Team does not recommend users disable Java in web browsers at this time.
