Professor Appointed to Board of Examiners in Counseling

Michael Loos, a University of Arkansas clinical assistant professor of counselor education, has been appointed to a three-year term on the state’s Board of Examiners in Counseling.

Gov. Mike Beebe announced the appointment recently. Loos will serve a term that expires Dec. 1, 2015. He holds a doctorate in counselor education from the University of Arkansas and is a licensed professional counselor and supervisor and also holds certification as an alcohol and drug abuse counselor.

Loos joined the faculty of the College of Education and Health Professions as an adjunct in the spring of 2007 and full time in the fall of 2011. He has worked in alcohol, drug abuse, and mental health counseling as a clinical practitioner and supervisor since 1969, working in diverse settings including mental health centers, prisons, public sector addiction-treatment programs, acute care hospitals, private psychiatric hospitals, and private practice, and in academia since 1998, tenured at the University of Wyoming before returning to the University of Arkansas.

Loos is immediate past-president of the International Coalition for Addiction Studies Education and former president of the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium for Alcohol and Other Drug Addictions.

The Arkansas Board of Examiners in Counseling is charged with protecting the public and ensuring the quality of counseling and marriage and family therapy services provided to Arkansans.
