Two University of Arkansas seniors studying German, Chelsea Burris and Kahlilah Fleming, have been named recipients of the Fulbright Award for Teaching.

This is a competitive program that employs recent graduates as teachers in German secondary schools; Burris and Fleming were among only 140 students selected in a nationwide competition of 392 applicants. The program is conducted by the Fulbright Commission in close cooperation with the Pädagogische Austauschdienst (Pedagogical Exchange Service) in Bonn.

Burris is from Eufaula, Okla., and is majoring in German and international relations with a minor in European studies. She is the daughter of Randy and Robyn Burris. Regarding the award, Burris said: “I'm honored to be selected for this program and excited to help work towards Senator Fulbright's goal of peace through education while representing the University of Arkansas.”

Fleming’s hometown is Fayetteville, and she is studying German with a minor in human development and family sciences. Fleming said of the award: “I feel incredibly privileged to have been offered a Fulbright Grant. I am greatly looking forward to the opportunity to live another country's culture, improve my grasp German, and hopefully inspire the kids of Germany to seek similar opportunities. I cannot think of a better experience for me to have at this time in my life, and I know that it will be a most positive experience for me.”
