German Master's Student Yvette Ortiz Receives Second Fellowship to Study Yiddish in New York

Yvette Ortiz, a master's candidate in German, has been awarded a $6,500 full tuition fellowship to study in the Uriel Weinreich program in Yiddish language, literature and culture of Bard College and the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.

Ortiz will take part in the program, which is held in New York City, in June and July for six weeks. The course load will be a combination of language and literature courses as well as focused research of female Yiddish Poets — Rajzel Zychlinsky, Celia Dropkin and Anna Margolin.

In the academic year of 2012-13, Ortiz twice offered beginning Yiddish lessons before Yiddish film showings as part of the Legacy Heritage Fund Jewish Studies Project grant received by Ortiz’ research mentor, Jennifer Hoyer.
