University Perspectives: Destination Graduation Instructor Workshop

FAYETTEVILLE -- On Monday, June 10th, approximately 70 University of Arkansas faculty and staff members participated in the inaugural "University Perspectives: Destination Graduation" instructor workshop. Ro Di Brezzo, vice provost for academic affairs, addressed the faculty and staff members and discussed the new University Perspectives course, which will replace the FYE course in the fall 2013 semester. Guest speakers for the event included Provost Sharon Gaber, Suzanne McCray, vice provost for enrollment management, Angela Oxford, director of the center for community engagement, Amanda Finch, program coordinator for the center, and Paige Hermansen, representing the One Book, One Community program.

University Perspectives is an innovative one hour freshman class designed to enhance student success. The course will emphasize the transition to the university and university-level work by addressing topics such as critical learning and civic engagement. It is believed that - in the upcoming fall semester - the University of Arkansas will become the first land-grant institution to require all incoming freshmen to take such a course.

Instructors and graduate students will collaborate using a unique curriculum and an online component to provide these freshmen with a valuable first-year learning experience. Instructors for this course will be titled "Provost Lecturers" and have been selected from a wide variety of faculty and expertise.

The next University Perspectives instructor workshop will be held on Monday, July 29th, from 8 a.m. until noon in room 408 of the Science Engineering Building.
