UREC to Offer Swing Dance, Healthy Cooking and Swim Lessons

Ballroom Dance, Latin Dance, Swim Lessons, Healthy Cooking, and American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED are just a few of the not-for-credit classes offered by the department of University Recreation during the fall 2013 semester. Through these instructional programs, UREC aims to introduce participants to recreational activities that can be performed for exercise, socialization, relaxation and fun throughout the lifetime.  Most classes contain both physical and instructional components, and are socially oriented.

Latin Dance, Ballroom Dance, and Swing Dance reflect recent and renewed interest in dance forms, as well as offer multicultural experiences for participants. Although many participants enjoy registering as a pair, a partner is not required. For a more expressive dance experience, try Ballet & Modern Dance on Wednesday nights from Sept. 18 through Nov. 16. Not sure? Try it first! Dance classes are open during their first week to let participants check them out and meet the instructors.  Simply attend the dance class of your choice during the week of September 16-20.

Aquatics programs offered by University Recreation include Adult and Youth Swim Lessons, designed for beginning swimmers who desire basic swimming skills such as breath-holding, floating and basic arm and leg stroke combinations. Children registering for youth swim lessons must be part of a UREC family membership, and must be aged five to 12. Children 13 and older may be registered for Adult Swim Lessons. Adult Fitness Swimming is offered for more advanced swimmers age 13 and over who are refining strokes or training for triathlons.

A Healthy Cooking demonstration will be featured from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 10. This class is free, and participants will get to enjoy plenty of samples!

University Recreation is proud to continue its role as an American Red Cross provider of First Aid, CPR and AED certification classes. These classes enhance the well-being of the entire campus and community by increasing the number of trained emergency responders.

Red Cross certification courses are open to registration by the general public, and do not require UREC memberships or guest pass procedures. All other classes are open to registration by students and UREC members only. Non-members may register with current UREC members by following guest pass procedures for each class attended. A complete schedule of session dates, class days and times, and session costs can be viewed at here.

To register for any of these programs, please visit the UREC main office in HPER 225. For questions regarding these or any other University Recreation Non-Credit Instructional programs, please contact Katie Helms at khelms@uark.edu or 575-4684.
