IT Services Names New Associate CIO for Campus Networks
IT Services announces that David Bruce, formerly manger of campus networks, has been promoted to associate chief information officer for campus networks and reports directly to Dennis Brewer, the director of Information Technology Services and associate vice chancellor for IT.
Bruce's promotion is part of a reorganization that separates networking from Windows virtual services, reflecting growth in IT Services network and virtual services responsibilities. For example, since 2007, wireless network access points increased 700 percent, while the number of wired ports on the university network increased over 37 percent. In 2007, the university supported a 150 megabyte pipe that was regularly filled to capacity. The campus network now provides a 2-gigabyte-per-second pipe that manages average traffic peaks of 1.4 gigabytes per second.
Bruce is a network design and virtualization expert. In his former position, he managed six engineers responsible for core network services, the campus Internet, the Data Center network and wireless access. The quality of technical expertise in the Network Engineering Team is a reflection of Bruce's ability to recruit, retain and develop staff. Two previous members of the team are currently employed by Google and Facebook.
In 2001, Bruce developed his first authentication gateway for wireless and residence hall networks. He went on to develop access control systems that eventually managed wired and wireless access for all users. Recently, Bruce's team accelerated IPv6 deployment, expanded network infrastructure to meet growth in campus facilities, began deployment of Network Access Control to unify authentication for all campus networks, and expanded availability of 10-gigabyte campus server connections in the Data Center. The Network Engineering Team also protects university resources by maintaining network security.
