FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas Police Department is looking for volunteers for the campus portion of the statewide Crosswalk Safety Awareness Day, Wednesday Oct. 9 from 8 a.m until 5 p.m.

This year is the first time that staff and faculty members are being recruited, as well as students, for the annual event. Volunteers are needed to stand near selected crosswalks on campus with signs calling attention to crosswalk safety issues. Volunteers can sign up for one or two hour shifts.

The purpose of the event is to remind drivers and pedestrians that crosswalk safety is a shared responsibility: drivers are required by law to stop for pedestrians in designated crosswalks; pedestrians are required to use the crosswalks, on campus and off, but shouldn’t step into the street before making sure that vehicles are actually stopping. Neither drivers nor pedestrians should be using their cell phones as they approach a crosswalk.

Anyone interested in participating should contact Lt. Gary Crain at UAPD, 575-2311 or garyc@uark.edu.
