FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Extension reproductive physiologist Keith Bramwell and associate professor Lanier Nalley have been named Outstanding International Education Faculty Award winners in the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences at the University of Arkansas.

Nalley is in the agricultural economics and agribusiness department while Bramwell is in the poultry science department.

Bramwell and Nalley have led an interdisciplinary team of students to Mozambique, Africa, each of the last three years for an international development service study abroad class. The experiences have impacted students both academically and personally in preparing them for professional careers.

The Global Community Development project involves working with New Horizons, a company in Nampula Mozambique. The partnership between an African farmer and Arkansas alumni has the philanthropic goal of creating sustainable business development in Africa while producing a protein product for social and health value in low-income countries.

Outreach at the poultry production farm includes working with a local orphanage, primary school and a two-year technical college, engaging students with the business while also immersing them into the culture as participants.

As Outstanding International Educational Faculty Award winners, Bramwell and Nalley have each received $3,000 from the Bumpers College to support their international efforts.

Bramwell earned his bachelor’s degree in animal science from Brigham Young University in 1989, and his master’s degree and doctorate in poultry science from the University of Georgia in 1991 and 1995, respectively.

He joined the Center of Excellence for Poultry Science in 2000.

His research areas include factors that influence fertility and embryonic mortality in broiler breeders; hatching egg handling and storage, and the effects on hatchability and embryo livability; and areas of the poultry industry as they relate to reproduction and hatchery management. Bramwell’s research has been presented globally, including in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Nalley earned his bachelor’s degree in agricultural and development economics from Ohio State University, his master’s degree in agricultural economics from Mississippi State University and his doctorate in agricultural economics with an emphasis on international policy from Kansas State University in 2007.

Nalley has conducted research at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center in Mexico City, Mexico, on the welfare analysis of international public wheat breeding, and worked with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture in Accra, Ghana, and the International Rice Research Institute in Los Banos, Philippines.
