October Art Scene Brings Printmaker, Painter, Educator to Campus

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – sUgAR’s return, three guest artists and four exhibitions fill October with art.

sUgAR, the University of Arkansas Student Gallery, will reopen in October. A celebratory reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, on the basement level of One East Square Plaza as part of Fayetteville’s First Thursday. The event will also kick off Paint, Pixels and Process invitational group exhibition showcasing work by adjunct and visiting faculty in the department of art. 

The department will host three visiting artists this month. All events for these guests will be held in room 213 of the Fine Arts Center, unless otherwise noted.

Guest artist Anna Tsantir will give a demonstration at 8:30 a.m. and lecture at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3. There will also be a reception in her honor at 5 p.m. outside the Fine Arts Center Gallery. These events complement a printmaking exhibit by Tsantir in the Fine Arts Center hallway exhibition cases, which will run until Friday, Oct. 18.

Guest artist Chie Fueki will give a lecture at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10. Her work has been featured and reviewed in many publications including the New York Times, Bomb, The New Yorker, The Village Voice and Time Out New York.

Guest scholar Camilla McComb will speak at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24. Her most recent publication, “Cultivating a healing classroom environment,” may be read in the book The Heart of Art Education: Holistic approaches to creativity, integration, and transformation.

Resplendent, an exhibition in the Fine Arts Center Gallery, continues until Friday, Oct. 11. The Gallery will present Resonance: Audible Silence in Portraiture beginning Wednesday, Oct 23. The exhibition featuring Petah Coyne, Gail Deery, Anne-Karin Furunes, Portia Munson and Bill Viola will close Wednesday, Dec. 4. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The Tsantir printmaking exhibition will continue in the Fine Arts Gallery Exhibition Cases until Friday, Oct. 18. The display also features books created by students of in the 2013 Art in Rome program. Beginning Monday, Oct. 21, the cases will hold pieces by art education students.
