Hyperbolic Crochet at Anne Kittrell Art Gallery
University Programs presents Hyperbolic Crochet by Daina Taimina
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University Programs will host an exhibit by Daina Taimina, Hyperbolic Crochet, in the Anne Kittrell Art Gallery through Oct. 27. There will be a reception from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, in the Kittrell Gallery and the lecture at 7 p.m. in the Union Theatre.
This event is free to current University of Arkansas students through the Student Activities Fee, and students must show university ID for entrance. Admission for general public is free and contingent upon seating availability. Taimina, professor of mathematics at Cornell University, will exhibit crochet models of hyperbolic planes. In 1997, she created a crochet model of hyperbolic space that allows one to tangibly explore this type of geometry. She went on to write the book “Crocheting Adventures with Hyperbolic Planes.” It explains the histories of both hyperbolic planes and crocheting, along with many other parts of art, science, and math. The book and the Hyperbolic Crochet allow one to visualize these extensively different subjects, math and art, in a whole new way. Taimina will speak on "Art and Mathematics" at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, in the Union Theatre.
