'Translations' Opens Drama Department's New Studio Series
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The department of drama opens its new Studio Series with Translations by Brian Friel. The drama explores barriers between cultures and the struggles that accompany change through society's most basic element – language.
Friel's play is set in the small Irish town of Baile Beag in 1833. The town's inhabitants, both Irish and English, face many challenges as they attempt to understand one another amidst a changing Ireland.
Mavourneen Dwyer (Blithe Spirit, 2012), associate professor of voice and speech in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, directs a cast of graduate and undergraduate drama students in a production described as touching, exquisite and sometimes funny.
Translations opens Thursday, Oct. 24, and will run until Sunday, Oct. 27, at Walton Arts Center's Nadine Baum Studios, 505 W. Spring Street in Fayetteville. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and university faculty and staff, and $3 for University of Arkansas students with valid student identification. Due to limited seating, patrons are strongly encouraged to purchase tickets in advance. Season tickets for the Studio Series are also available for $12, $9.50 and $7, respectively. The department of drama accepts cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.
