This Week in the Visual and Performing Arts: Nov. 15-22

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – There are many opportunities to take part in the visual and performing arts the week of Nov. 15-22. Students, faculty, staff and friends are encouraged to attend these on-campus and off-campus events hosted by faculty, departments and programs in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.

An exhibit of works by students of associate professor Angela LaPorte in the Fine Arts Center hallway exhibition cases closes Friday, Nov. 15.

Also on Friday, Moon-Sook Park, associate professor of vocal studies, will give a studio recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center's Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Later that evening, She Stoops to Conquer will open in the University Theatre. The play will run through Sunday, Nov. 24. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $16 for adults, $14 for seniors, $14 for University of Arkansas faculty and staff, $7 for children under 18 and $3 for students with a valid student ID.

Guest artist Charles Villarrubia will give a tuba masterclass at 10 a.m. and a recital at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Saturday in Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, Catalina Barraza will give a violin recital at 6 p.m. and Jeff Payne will give a composition recital at 8:30 p.m.

Madeleine Hogue will give a violin recital at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov 17, in Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Sunday in Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall, the University of Arkansas Chamber Ensemble will perform at 3:30 p.m.

The University of Arkansas New Music Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Nadi Cinema will host a screening of Under the Moonlight (dir. Seyyid Reza Mir-Karimi, Iran 2001) at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, in Mullins Library, room 104.

Simultaneously, the University of Arkansas Latin American Ensemble will give a concert in Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Guest artist Kimberly Trowbridge will give a lecture at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in room 213 of the Fine Arts Center

Also on Thursday, Benjamin Pierce, associate professor of music, will give a tuba and euphonium concert at 6 p.m. and Andrew Baker will give an oboe recital at 8 p.m. in Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

The Tournées Festival continues on Thursday with La fée (The Fairy) at 7:45 p.m. in Old Main's Giffels Auditorium.

Bachelor of fine Arts students will present artwork at sUgAR (the university's student art gallery), located at 1 East Center on the downtown Fayetteville square. The exhibition opens Friday, Nov. 22, with a reception at 5 p.m.

Also on Friday, the department of music will host a vocal class at 6 p.m. and Stephen Byars will give a tuba recital at 8 p.m. in Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Resonance: Audible Silence in Portraiture continues until Wednesday, Dec. 4, in the Fine Arts Center Gallery. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

An Odyssey of Dreams: A Decade of Paintings 2003-2012 an exhibit curated by Judith Brodsky continues until Friday, Dec. 6, in the Arkansas Union Anne Kittrell Gallery. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.
