Christina Crowder, January Student Leader of the Month

Junior Christina Crowder has been selected as the Student Leader of the Month for January.  Originally from Tulsa, Okla., Crowder came to the University of Arkansas to pursue a dietetics major. Christina is also a member of the Honors College. She is currently involved in the Associated Student Government as director of campus life.

Autumn Lewis, ASG chief of staff, praised Crowder for her work toward “promoting the interests of students and accomplishing initiatives of the executive officers.” Lewis cited the creation of the meal donation plan as one such initiative where Crowder’s contributions were vital: “This program allows students with on-campus meal plans who do not use the full balance of their plan to donate the leftover meals to individuals who take advantage of the Full Circle Food Pantry. Christina’s relationships with campus administrators have allowed this initiative to become a reality.”

When asked why she became involved in these activities, Christina said, “I realized that I am fulfilled in leadership positions that allow me to use my abilities to improve the lives of others.”  Christina believes that an effective leader possesses the ability to “seek first to understand those he or she leads,” as stated in one of her favorite books, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen Covey. She further states: “If one can grasp the concept of understanding how an individual operates, much conflict and push-back can be avoided and make room for progress and innovation.”

The Student Leader of the Month award, sponsored by New Student & Family Programs, recognizes University of Arkansas undergraduate students for their excellence in leadership through campus involvement, leadership activities, or through volunteer and community service. More information about the award can be found here. All nomination forms should be submitted to Jordan Scribner, graduate assistant for New Student & Family Programs, via email at jascribn@uark.edu by the first Friday of each month.
