The University Recreation Club Sports program is hosting its annual Clothing Driving for the third year this month. The drive will run from March 3-30 and all donations will support LifeSource, International. All donations can be dropped off at the UREC Main Office (HPER 225) during normal operating hours. Items being collected include new and gently used shirts, jackets, pants, shoes, and accessories.

Clubs will be competing against one another to see who can donate the most clothing based on weight and anyone can donate on a club’s behalf. The club that donates the most clothing based on weight will earn additional points that equate to additional allocation funds for next year.

This event is spearheaded by the Club Sports Advisory Council, a six-person council consisting of officers from various clubs. On why this event is so important, Ethan McCormick, Treasurer of the Quidditch club, said, “This winter has been difficult for everyone. Imagine how much more so if you didn’t have enough clothes to keep warm. Your donation can make a huge different for someone in need.” Shawn Hohendorf of Men’s Soccer has similar sentiments and said, “The Clothing Drive is one of the opportunities we have throughout the year to give back to the community. Being able to donate to a charity such as LifeSource allows them to serve more people and touch more lives.”

Last year the program saw 18 clubs donate 4, 833 pounds of clothing with the Men’s Soccer club donating 1,394 pounds and winning the drive. This year’s goal is 4,000 pounds and 20 clubs participating.

The Clothing Drive is one of three program-wide community service efforts. This academic year 17 clubs donated 2,561 pounds of food to the Full Circle Campus Food Pantry on campus.  The next event will be the Cesar Chavez Blood Drive, benefiting the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, on April 3 in HPER Gym 2 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. More information on all community service efforts can be found on the Club Sports website, and the Facebook page.
