Cameron Caja, March Student Leader of the Month

Senior Cameron Caja has been selected as the March Student Leader of the Month. Originally from Mountain Home, Ark., Cameron came to the University of Arkansas to major in Asian studies, international relations and political science. Cameron is the founder and chair of Razorback Recovery, a volunteer student effort that recovers surplus food from campus dining halls and distributes the goods to individuals in need.  Cameron also serves as a peer adviser for the office of study abroad, an International Student and Scholars cross-cultural mentor, and a core member of the International Culture Team.

When asked what he believes are the most important characteristics of a leader, Cameron said, “The most important qualities of a leader are optimistic vision and the ability to meaningfully connect with all types of people.  Optimistic vision is necessary because a leader should chase an idea, encourage others to work toward a better future through cooperative action, and be the impetus behind a groups morale.”

Cameron also states that, “Being able to truly connect with diverse people is also necessary for a good leader today because of the globalized world in which we live.  Our opportunity has never been greater for the exchange of ideas between individuals.  The varied backgrounds of these individuals drastically increase the creation of innovative perspectives and solutions.  Everyone has a unique perspective and ability; a good leader can recognize this and value those qualities.”

The Student Leader of the Month award, sponsored by New Student & Family Programs, recognizes University of Arkansas undergraduate students for their excellence in leadership through campus involvement, leadership activities, or through volunteer and community service.  More information about the award can be found here.  All nomination forms should be submitted to Jordan Scribner, graduate assistant for New Student & Family Programs, via email at jascribn@uark.edu by the first Friday of each month.
