This Week in the Visual and Performing Arts: April 4-11

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – April kicks off an eventful month in the visual and performing arts with a week filled with four new plays, 19 musical performances, two lectures and two art exhibitions. Students, faculty, staff and guests are encouraged to attend these on-campus and off-campus events in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.

Faith and the Devil, an installation by Lesley Dill, will close Friday, April 4. The exhibit may be viewed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Gallery.

The department of drama will present Hot Off the Page! Play Festival Friday, April 4, in Kimpel Hall’s Studio 404. A new work by Betty Anderson will begin at 6:30 p.m. and Robert Flaherty Hart will present Poor Relations at 7:30 p.m. Seating is limited.

Also on Friday, guest artist Joachim Reinhuber will give a piano concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. Johan Botes, instructor of piano, will also perform.

John Brilhart will give a French horn recital at 1 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center’s Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Saturday in Stella Boyle Smith, Paxton Taylor will give a percussion recital.

Hot Off the Page! Play Festival continues Saturday, April 5, in Kimpel Hall’s Studio 404. Kill/Shot by Rachel Washington will begin at 6:30 p.m. and Brittany Kay Taylor will present V is for Violin at 7:30 p.m. Seating is limited.

Emily Willis will give a French horn recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Corey Eldon Divine will present a trumpet recital at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 6, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Sunday in Stella Boyle Smith, the University of Arkansas Saxophone Chamber Ensemble will perform at 3:30 p.m.

The University of Arkansas Inspirational Chorale will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday at First Assembly of God in Springdale.

At the same time, the University of Arkansas Women’s Chorus will join with the Oklahoma State University Women’s Chorus for a chorus showcase at Frist United Presbyterian Church in Fayetteville.

The Tusla Kezmer Band will perform at 5 p.m. Sunday in the Arkansas Union Theater.

The University of Arkansas Tuba and Euphonium Quartets will give a concert at 6 p.m. Sunday in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Sunday in Stella Boyle Smith, Amanda Davis will give a voice recital at 8 p.m.

Case Teague will give a trumpet recital at 6 p.m. Monday, April 7, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Monday in Stella Boyle Smith, Elvis Barksdale, II will give an oboe recital at 7:30 p.m.

Eddie Jones, coordinator of vocal studies, will present a studio recital at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Tuesday in Stella Boyle Smith, Andrew Chu will give a violin recital at 8 p.m.

Visiting art scholar Wayne Franits will give a lecture on two paintings by Johannes Vermer at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in room 213 of the Fine Arts Center.

Also on Thursday, Joel Head will give a conducting recital at 6 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also in Stella Boyle Smith on Thursday, Sarah Busch will present a flute recital at 8 p.m.

Guest scholar Petr Janata will give a lecture on the cognitive science of music at 2 p.m. Friday, April 11, in Mullins Library room 104.

Also on Friday, William Brani will give a saxophone recital at 6 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Later in Stella Boyle Smith, the University of Arkansas New Music Ensemble will perform at 8 p.m.

Divide Light continues until Sunday, April 13, in the Joy Pratt Markham Gallery at the Walton Arts Center. Gallery hours are 9 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, and one hour prior to most Walton Arts Center performances.
