FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Devotees of literature, connoisseurs of language and lovers of creative fiction and poetry are invited to Showcase Day, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Friday, April 25. The event, which is the first of its kind sponsored by department of English in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences, will be held at University House, located on the corner of Maple and Lindell avenues, on the university campus.

Departmental faculty members, along with undergraduate and graduate students, will accompany posters depicting innovations in teaching and scholarship in English, American literature, rhetoric, composition and creative writing. Special displays will feature the department’s programs in medieval and Renaissance literature, African American and Latina literature, comparative literature, Jewish American fiction and Southern American studies as well as its emphases on service learning, literacy outreach and technology-enhanced teaching.

Attendees are welcome to enjoy refreshments and converse with faculty and students beginning at 3:30 p.m. At 4:30, professor Joseph Candido, known for his widely-praised Shakespeare course, will offer a 30-minute talk about Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It. Attendees are encouraged to ask questions and visit the poster displays again following the lecture.

A performance of As You Like It, presented by the department of drama, will begin at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre. Those wishing to attend this complement to Candido’s lecture may purchase tickets online or by calling 479-575-4752.

Showcase Day open to both the university community and the public at large. For additional information, please contact David Jolliffe, professor of English and holder of the Brown Chair in English and Literacy, at djollif@uark.edu or 479-575-2289.
