Sixth Annual Summer Chamber Music Festival Opens This Week
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The sixth annual KUAF/Fulbright Summer Chamber Music Festival begins Thursday, May 15, with a concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Center at the University of Arkansas. Music professors Stephen Gates and Er-Gene Kahng have been organizing the festival in collaboration with KUAF 91.3 FM and the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences since 2009.
The festival will feature guest artists as well as faculty from the university’s department of music. Performances will include a variety of chamber music using diverse instrumental groups from many musical eras. Performers for Thursday include faculty members, Gates (cello) and Kahng (violin) along with Johan Botes (piano), Ronda Mains (flute) and Timothy Thompson (French horn).
Selections for Thursday’s concert include:
- Brahms: Horn Trio, op. 40
- John Rutter: Suite Antique
- Shostakovich: Piano Trio No. 2
The four-week series will continue with weekly concerts until Friday, June 6. The June concert will be held at the Great Hall at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville. The May 15, 22 and 29 concerts will be held in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.
Parking is available in the Stadium Drive Parking Facility, where parking is free after 5 p.m. Entrance to the parking facility is on Stadium Drive, and the facility's elevator will take patrons to street level directly across from the Fine Arts Center. The performances are free and open to the public thanks to support from the University of Arkansas, Fulbright College and private donors.
