FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences Department of Art has hired Marty Maxwell Lane as an assistant professor. She comes to the University of Arkansas from the Kansas City Art Institute.

“Professor Lane’s dedication to sharing her knowledge is inspiring,” said Todd Shields, dean of Fulbright College. “She is a prolific conference presenter, and I look forward to seeing what her consistent involvement – through her writing, service and lectures – will do for the university’s reputation.”

Lane is a graphic designer, educator and researcher. She has presented her ideas on design pedagogy, media literacy, collaboration and interactive spaces that facilitate learning at conferences in Berlin, London, Rome and the United States.

“Professor Lane has a great background in graphic design and will bring a fresh style of teaching to the Department of Art,” said Jeannie Hulen, chair of the department. “Her active role in the design community, with contributions to various AIGA [an American professional organization for design] chapters, has taken her around the world.”

Collaboration is a major component in Lane’s research and teaching, and she looks for opportunities to build interdisciplinary relationships. Her teaching experience includes interaction design and typography, information architecture, multimedia experience, narrative art and professonal practice.

“I’m very interested in the evolving role of design, how design can connect with other disciplines and encouraging rigorous context-based explorations,” Lane said. “I look forward to exploring these ideas and collaborating with my colleagues at the University of Arkansas.”

Lane received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design (honors) from the University of Illinois-Chicago and a Master of Graphic Design from North Carolina State University.
