ThunderHawgs Looking for Exceptional Students
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Arkansas – Detachment 030, the ThunderHawgs -- offers opportunities for qualified incoming freshman and returning sophomores, but time is limited to join this semester. Cadets are required to take two classes in their first semester, Aerospace Studies 1011, and Leadership Lab 1011L. The deadline to sign up for these courses is Friday, Aug. 29.
Air Force ROTC offers scholarships for competitive students, specialized academic and leadership training as well as unique career opportunities. In addition cadets in their junior and senior years receive a tax-free monthly stipend to help offset living expenses.
AFROTC accepts all students from all majors, but those earning engineering, technical, and science degrees meet the Air Force’s greatest current needs. Language students, especially those studying in Arabic, are also in great demand.
Nurses are also needed in the Air Force, with responsibilities that range from delivering babies to researching breakthrough medical treatments.
In terms of career opportunities, the sky – and beyond – is the limit. Air Force pilots fly the most advanced aircraft in the world. Air Force space operations and nuclear and missile operations include jobs in surveillance, intercontinental ballistic missile launch, space lifts and satellite command. The Air Force also depends on accurate weather forecasting to chart safe flight paths and report how atmospheric conditions could affect operations planning.
Air Force ROTC cadets at the U of A receive education and training to prepare them to enter the Air Force as military officers when they graduate. Detachment 030, the ThunderHawgs, is among the best in the country, ranked second in the nation for academics and fitness, and first in the southwest region.
