Uni to Speaker at Global Food Opportunities Seminar

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Zehava Uni, professor of poultry nutrition, physiology and embryology at Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel, is scheduled to be on the University of Arkansas campus Friday to speak as part of the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences Global Food Opportunities seminar series.

Uni is speaking at 8:30 a.m. in the Poultry Science Auditorium (Room 211). The seminar is open to all students, faculty and staff, as well as the general public. Uni’s presentation is “Improving Poultry Production Globally through Nutrition Strategies.” A short question and answer session follows her presentation.

Uni’s visit is co-hosted by the Department of Poultry Science and the Bumpers College International Programs Office. The Global Food Opportunities series exposes students to international experiences and opportunities to expand career and academic options.

Chris Sims, a poultry science and agricultural business double major honors student, is on the program to discuss his global experiences. Sims is also chair of the Bumpers College Honors Board.

Uni’s research on poultry nutrition is focused on improving efficiency and welfare in poultry production. Her lab concentrates on the functional development of the chicken digestive system, and the influence of feed and specific nutrients on the integrity and functional capability of the gut epithelium.

Uni teaches several courses, including “Principles in Nutrition of Farm Animals,” “Management and Nutrition of Poultry,” “Quality and Production of Poultry Products,” and “Introduction to Animal Physiology” in the Department of Animal Science.

She is a member of the World Poultry Science Association, American Animal Science Society, Israeli Poultry Science Association and European Poultry Science Association.

Previous speakers in the Global Food Opportunities seminar series include Jose Carreia de Simas, who leads the product development team in the research and development area of Elanco Animal Health; Glenn Shinn, a senior partner at Global Consulting Solutions and Borlaug Senior Scientist in international agricultural development; and Robert Zeigler, a plant pathologist and director general of the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines.
