National Geographic Adventure Speaker to Present on Campus

Jennifer Pharr-Davis, 2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, will give two presentations to the University of Arkansas campus community on Monday, Nov. 17. Pharr-Davis is a world-renowned adventurer, athlete, author, and speaker best known for recording the fastest completion of the entire Appalachian Trail — 2,185-miles in just 46 days.
By trekking an average of 47 miles a day, she won the hearts and admiration of outdoor enthusiasts and trail buffs worldwide. Pharr-Davis has now hiked over 12,000 miles on six different continents and serves as an inspiration to countless people. She has written five books, including two memoirs; Becoming Odyssa, about her experience hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2005 and her most recent book, Called Again, about her experience hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2011. She is the owner and founder of Blue Ridge Hiking Company.
The presentations have been made possible with the generous support of Adventure Subaru, Mountain Dew, Fayettechill, the Department of Geosciences, and University Recreation’s the Outdoor Connection Center. Camping equipment from Coleman will be given away as door prizes at each presentation.
Admission is free, and all university community members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
- Noon to 1 p.m.: Presentation will be held in front of University Recreation’s new climbing wall, located in the HPER, Gym 1. Lunch will be provided. Topic of presentation is preparation and perseverance. Description: A coming-of-age tale that includes lightning strikes, snow storms and stalkers. This engaging talk offers themes of perseverance, self-worth and simplicity.
- 4:10-5:30 p.m.: Presentation will be held in BELL 2282. Topic of presentation is conservation. It is hard for people to value what they have not experienced. Pharr-Davis will talk about her journey in sustainability and teach how you can protect the environment by exposing other people to the outdoors.
- 6-7 p.m.: Social at Fayettechill; 205 W. Dickson St., Fayetteville. Topic of presentation is stories from the Appalachian Trail. Description: A mingle session to hear Pharr-Davis’ recount stories from her 46 Day Record on the Appalachian Trail.
