This Week in the Visual and Performing Arts: Nov. 14- 21

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will host many events this week, including multiple recitals, art exhibitions, a film screening and a play. Students, faculty, staff and guests are encouraged to attend these events in the visual and performing arts.

Katie Martin will give a flute recital Friday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center’s Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Friday in Stella Boyle Smith, Andrew Chu will perform a violin recital at 8 p.m.

Madeleine Hogue will perform a violin recital Saturday, Nov. 15, at 6 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Kristi Smylie will give a flute recital Sunday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Kin, a play by Bathesheba Doran, will close Sunday with performances at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the University Theatre. The production may also be seen the preceding Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, faculty and staff and $5 for students.

Also on Sunday, the University of Arkansas Saxophone Chamber Ensemble will perform at 3:30 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Later that afternoon, Kailey Miller will present her senior composition titled, “A Year,” in the University Baptist Church at 4 p.m. The recital will feature members of the University of Arkansas Orchestra, Schola Cantorum, the Women’s Chorus and the Children’s Choir.

The University of Arkansas Percussion Ensemble will give a concert Monday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Walton Arts Center’s Baum-Walker Hall. Tickets are $5 for adults and $1 for students.

Students under the direction of Benjamin Pierce will present the University of Arkansas Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Later that evening, the Department of Music will host a retrospective of Alfred Schnittke, a Soviet and Russian composer, at 7: 30 p.m., in Giffels Auditorium. A second retrospective featuring his chamber, small ensemble and film score will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at Crystal Bridges of American Art.

Also on Tuesday, Andrew Baker will perform an oboe recital in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall at 8 p.m.

Nadi Cinema, the Middle East Film Club, will screen, Winter of Discontent (dir. Ibrahim el Batout, Egypt 2012), Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. in the Hembree Auditorium, room 107E in the Agriculture, Food and Life Sciences building.

At the same time, the University of Arkansas Jazz Ensemble will perform in the Arkansas Union Theatre.

Boston Mountain Brassworks, a faculty brass quintet, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

The art exhibit Three’s A Crowd, will be on display until Wednesday, Nov. 26, at sUgaR, the student art gallery. The gallery is located at 1 E. Center St. on the Fayetteville Square, with hours from 3:30- 6:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday until Wednesday, Nov. 26.

Luscious: The Body Adorned, an exhibition curated by Cynthia Norse Thompson, will continue until Friday, Dec. 5, in the Fine Arts Center Gallery. Gallery hours are from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 2-5 p.m. Sunday.

The Arkansas Experience in the First World War, an exhibition of artifacts including uniforms, helmets, weapons and photos will remain on display through December in the Bogle Exhibit Hall on the 5th floor of Old Main.
