The Jewish Studies Program concludes its fall 2014 event series this evening with a screening of the 1939 Yiddish film Tevye the Dairyman (ca. 90 min), an adaptation of beloved Yiddish writer Sholem Aleichem's Tevye stories.

These stories eventually became familiar to a wider audience through the musical and later film Fiddler on the Roof. Tevye the Dairyman, like Fiddler, tackles issues 19th- and early 20th-century European Jews faced, especially regarding forces of modernization, political upheaval, and government persecution. How will Tevye react to his daughter Chava's desire to marry outside the faith?

Come experience a different telling of the material than you might know from Fiddler. Professor Jacob Adler will be providing commentary and discussion.

The showing is at 6.30 p.m. at Temple Shalom in Fayetteville. This event is made possible by The Legacy Heritage Fund Jewish Studies Project (directed by the Association for Jewish Studies), the Jewish Federation of Arkansas, the UA Hillel, and the National Center for Jewish Film.
