Head of Juilliard's Career Center Speaks With Music Students

Barrett Hipes, director of the Alan D. Marks Center for Career Services and Entrepreneurship at The Juilliard School, will be speaking at 3:05 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. Hipes is an alumnus of the University of Arkansas Department of Music in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. He is currently an adjunct associate professor of fine arts at St. John’s University, and he has previously served on the music faculty at Rutgers University, and has lectured at NYU, the Cooper Union, and continues to work with the University of Arkansas Summer Music Program.

“We are so glad to welcome Barrett back to campus,” said Ronda Mains, chair of the Music Department and flute instructor at the University of Arkansas. “Barrett has worked in every facet of music. He has performed, taught, and will now help establish the careers of many young musicians. We are extremely excited to have him back in Arkansas to speak with our students.”

Barrett studied saxophone and percussion at the University of Arkansas as a student of Stanley Morris and Chalon Ragsdale, and later received a Master of Music degree at Rutgers University under the guidance of She-e Wu, Christopher Deviney, and Bob Becker. He is currently a doctoral candidate at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center where he studied under Morris Lang.

“Barrett will no doubt have a major impact on our students,” said professor Chal Ragsdale, University Professor of percussion. “He is a perfect example of how music students can achieve in whatever they wish to do, whether it be music performance or administration.”

He has performed in venues as diverse as small clubs, art galleries, and college campuses, all the way to Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and has curated performances throughout the east coast, as well the Costa Rica International Jazz Festival and the Cayman Arts Festival.
