AIM Conference Targets Potential Graduate Students

The University of Arkansas Black Graduate Student Association, in conjunction with the Graduate School and International Education, will host the Attracting Intelligent Minds Conference Feb. 19-21.

The conference, now in its eighth year, provides opportunities for prospective graduate students from historically black colleges and universities to learn about the U of A graduate programs, funding sources and research opportunities. Those in attendance will also meet with faculty and students from their programs of interest.

Stacy D. Williams, executive secretary for the Office of the Haiti Special Coordinator in the United States Department of the State, will be the headline speaker at the conference. Alfred Dowe, assistant director of graduate recruitment and community outreach and adviser to the Black Graduate Student Association, said the ablility to interact with Williams is a great opportunity for the attendees.

"By introducing Stacy Williams, we introduce the students to employers that are interested in offering them professional opportunities after graduate school," Dowe said.

Those attending this year's conference come from a variety of institutions across the nation including Fort Valley State University, Hampton University, Clark Atlanta University, Florida A&M University, Spelman College, Howard University, North Carolina AT&T University, East Tennessee University and Morehouse College.

Dowe said the conference has grown into one of the signature events produced by the Black Graduate Student Association and is essential in recruiting some of the most talented undergraduates in the country.

"The visiting students represent the very best scholars and researchers in the country, who just happen to also represent underrepresented populations," he said.
