University Recreation's Outdoor Connection Center to Host Sea Kayaking Trip to Alaska

University Recreation invites you to join the Outdoor Connection Center, along with Iowa State’s Outdoor Recreation program, to go on a sea-kayaking trip to one of the largest national forest areas in the United States, Prince William Sound, Alaska.

The group will spend June 18 through June 25 sea kayaking and camping outside of Whittier, Alaska. The cost of the trip is $1,150 for students and $1,350 for faculty, staff, and UREC members. The cost includes all sea kayaks and necessary gear, lodging and transportation once arrived in Alaska, camping equipment, camping fees, highly trained staff to lead the trip, and meals. Flight is not included. The deadline to register for this trip is Friday, March 13.

“Alaska is one of the last great frontiers in this country, and this seems like a great way to explore it,” said Scott Dirksen, director of Outdoor Recreation and Education at Lyon College and former UREC graduate assistant.

Participants will need to make round trip flight arrangements into Anchorage, Alaska, arriving June 18. While this trip is great for beginner sea kayakers, a moderate amount of physical fitness is required. Prince William Sound (Chugach National Forest) is known for its steep and glaciated terrain. The Sound contains 150 glaciers that are well known for their dramatic calving.
