Walmart Partners with The Sustainability Consortium to Create Sustainability Leaders Shop

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Walmart unveiled its new online Sustainability Leaders Shop in partnership with The Sustainability Consortium on Feb. 24 during the company’s annual Global Sustainability Milestone Meeting, in San Bruno, California, home of Walmart.com. Participants in the presentations included Sheila Bonini, Sustainability Consortium CEO, as well as consortium board members Jonathan Atwood of Unilever and Elizabeth Sturcken of the Environmental Defense Fund.

The Sustainability Consortium is jointly administered by Arizona State University and the University of Arkansas.

The Walmart Sustainability Leaders shop is an online shopping portal on Walmart.com created to help customers identify and purchase products from suppliers that are leading in sustainability. The ranking and selection of Sustainability Leaders are based upon the toolkits and metrics of The Sustainability Consortium.

Walmart's announcement has generated extensive media coverage, including a piece in Harvard Business Review, written by Andrew Winston, author of The Big Pivot and co-author of Green To Gold. Winston focused on the work and impact of The Sustainability Consortium, noting it "has been plugging along, doing the hard work of figuring out what makes certain products more sustainable than others. The organization now has guidelines and data on over 100 product categories from bread, books, and computers to clothing, TVs, and toys.”
