Visiting Phi Beta Kappa Scholar to Talk on the War on Poverty and the Elderly

Kathleen McGarry, a faculty member at UCLA and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research, will talk on the War on Poverty and what it has meant to America's aging population as part of the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program.

Her public lecture, 50 Years of the War on Poverty: What it meant for the elderly, will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in the Hillside Auditorium 202 on the University of Arkansas campus.

McGarry's visit is hosted by the Department of Economics in the Sam M. Walton College of Business.

The Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program provides students and faculty the opportunity to engage with top academics from other institutions. McGarry will be at Walton on Thursday and Friday to meet students and visit classes.

McGarry's research focuses on the well-being of the elderly with particular attention on public and private transfers, including the Medicare and Supplemental Security Income programs and the transfer of resources within families. Her research combines work on the financial aspects of aging with issues related to health economics to examine insurance coverage among the elderly.

She earned a doctorate in economics and a bachelor of science degree in mathematics from the State University of New York, Stony Brook.
