The University of Arkansas Department of Music is pleased to host John Hagstrom, trumpet, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, in residence from March 31 to April 2. During his residency, he will work with UA trumpet and music students in a variety of capacities. Hagstrom will conclude his residency with a recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 2, in the Fine Art Center's Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Prior to his work in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, studied at the Eastman School of Music and then continued as a member of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band in Washington, D.C., where he served as principal trumpet for three of those years. John Hagstrom later played as the principal trumpet in the Wichita Symphony Orchestra in Kansas and taught as an assistant professor of trumpet at Wichita State University. In 1996, Hagstrom won the fourth trumpet chair in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. One year later, he won the second trumpet position.

"John Hagstrom is considered to be one of the finest trumpet artists of our day. As a member of the renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra brass section for nearly two decades, Mr. Hagstrom has continued the legacy of that orchestra's brass sound worldwide," said Richard Rulli, professor of trumpet at the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. "In addition to his passion for trumpet performance, he is dedicated to music education."

Hagstrom's passion for music education enabled him, in collaboration with the Yamaha Corporation of America, to start Dream Out Loud. Dream Out Loud provides a number of free resources for elementary through high school students as well as their instructors and parents.

Both the master class and recital will take place in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center. Admission to both events is free and open to the public. Please contact the Department of Music by email or phone at 479-575-4701 for more information.
