FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Join the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences' celebration of the 110th anniversary of Sen. Fulbright's birth at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 9, in the Arkansas Union International Connections Lounge.

"We're keeping the program close to home this year," said Todd Shields, dean of Fulbright College. "The Fulbright Program and Fulbright College share a profound legacy, and we intend to highlight that connection through observations by three members of Fulbright College who are also Fulbright Scholars."

Luis Fernando Restrepo, assistant vice chancellor of diversity and community and professor of Spanish, comparative literature and Latin American and Latino studies, studied in Columbia in 2001. Matt Parnell, a doctoral student in the Department of History, studied youth political activism in Egypt from 2010 to 2011. Alia Parveen, a doctoral student in Cell and Molecular Biology, is a Fulbright Scholar from Pakistan who is currently studying at the University of Arkansas. They will reflect on the Fulbright experience and how their connections to the Fulbright legacy have affected their lives on both an academic and personal level.

The college began a tradition of commemorating the birthday of the former university president and United States senator in 2012. As with previous celebrations, this year's festivities will also feature the Hogwild Band and include birthday cake and lemonade.

"We hope the community will help us honor Senator Fulbright and his vision of peace through education at this annual celebration," Shields said. "All are welcome and encouraged to attend."
