Writing Project Plans Administrators' Retreat on Writing for Common Core

The Northwest Arkansas Writing Project at the University of Arkansas is sponsoring a retreat June 10 for school administrators focused on improving writing instruction.

The retreat from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. will be held at the University of Arkansas Global Campus, 3300 Market St., Suite 402, Rogers. The cost is $85 and online registration is available. Registration includes a book, supplies and light snacks.

"The purpose of the retreat is to build administrators' capacity as instructional leaders, with an emphasis on the Argument Writing Standards in the Common Core," said project coordinator Vicki Collet, associate professor of elementary education. "The retreat will offer administrators the opportunity to think, read and write together."

Writing Project teacher-consultants and U of A faculty will facilitate a collaborative learning experience that includes reading, writing and redesigning writing instruction for schools and districts.

"What it means to teach writing in our schools is different today than it was five years ago, and any school system undergoing rapid change will rely on the support and instructional leadership of building principals and district leaders," said Chris Goering, associate professor of English education and director of the Writing Project.

For nearly 20 years, the Northwest Arkansas Writing Project based in the College of Education and Health Professions has focused on improving writing in area schools. As one of 200 National Writing Project sites, the Northwest Arkansas Writing Project provides professional development for educators and directly reaches young writers through Kidswrite and Teenswrite summer camps.
