'We SEE You' Explores Professional Profiles and How to Make Them Work for You
Do you google yourself? An upcoming presentation sponsored by the University Libraries will let participants know why they should. Next Wednesday's "We SEE You: Managing Professional Profiles" will help graduate students and early faculty members better understand how online profiles work, how to make them productive, and how to make them stand out.
Necia Parker-Gibson is the plant sciences, environmental sciences, and human environmental sciences librarian at the University Libraries. Parker-Gibson will break down profiles on sites like LinkedIn and ImpactStory, and she'll explain some pros and cons of sites like academia.edu and ResearchGate.
Altmetrics sources and citation trackers, like Google Scholar and ImpactStory, will be covered, and Parker-Gibson will discuss some places to store data, and how to find alternatives. Participants will discover approaches of connecting to other researchers doing similar work and methods of distinguishing themselves from others with similar names or profiles.
This class also covers essentials like the difference between a CV and a resume, why accuracy matters, and why to limit personal content in professional profiles. Privacy online, and a bit about what is being taken from you on a casual basis, will be mentioned. We SEE You: Managing Professional Profiles is scheduled for 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, in AGRI 115. The presentation is free and open to anyone interested, though it will be especially helpful for graduate students and early faculty members.
