Kavouras Named to National Advisory Board Targeting Sudden Death in Sport

Stavros Kavouras, University of Arkansas associate professor and coordinator of the exercise science program, has been named to the Korey Stringer Institute's Medical and Science Advisory Board.

Kavouras will participate in the Round Table on Malignant Hypertermia in Physically Active Populations that will take place in September at the University of Connecticut, which houses the Korey Stringer Institute.

The institute's mission is to provide information, resources, assistance and advocacy for the prevention of sudden death in sport. It was founded in 2010 by Kelci Stringer, widow of Korey Stringer, a Pro Bowl offensive lineman for the Minnesota Vikings who died of exertional heat stroke in 2001.

The Medical and Science Advisory Board is made up of physicians, athletic trainers, exercise physiologists and strength and conditioning specialists who are internationally known experts on topics related to preventing sudden death in sport and physical activity.

Kavouras joined the faculty of the College of Education and Health Professions in 2012. He is an expert in the area of hydration and its effects on both health and exercise performance. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a Fellow of the European College of Sport Science. He earned his doctorate from the University of Connecticut and previously was on the faculty of Harokopio University in Athens, Greece, where he served as acting director of the Laboratory of Nutrition and Clinical Dietetics for six years.

Matt Ganio and Brendon McDermott, both U of A assistant professors of exercise science, also are affiliated with the institute, Ganio as chief statistical officer and McDermott as a member of the Medical and Science Advisory Board.
