FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Paolo Mantero will join the Department of Mathematical Sciences this fall as an assistant professor in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. Mantero comes to the University of Arkansas from the University of California at Riverside, where he received the 2014 Excellence in Teaching Award.

Mantero's primary research focus is commutative algebra and its interactions with algebraic geometry, combinatorics and homological algebra. Additional areas of study include liaison theory, residual intersections, Hilbert functions, Stillman's question, minimal free resolutions, projective dimension and regularity, symbolic powers, multiplicity theory, associated graded rings, and combinatorial algebra.

"The department is thrilled to welcome Dr. Mantero," said Mark Johnson, department chair. "He brings a great enthusiasm for his research in the area of commutative algebra, as well as teaching, at all levels, and will be a great asset to the College."

Mantero is an active member of the American Mathematical Society, has given more than 30 invited talks and serves as a reviewer for two mathematical research databases.

"Teaching plays a crucial role in my own understanding of my research and views of the world," Mantero said. "I look forward to sharing the beauty of mathematics to students at the University of Arkansas."

Mantero holds a Bachelor of Science, summa cum laude, and Master of Science, summa cum laude, in mathematics from the University of Genova in Italy. He earned a doctorate in mathematics from Purdue University.
