Former NSF Program Director to Conduct Workshop

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Donald Hantula, a former program director at the National Science Foundation, will present a workshop on the federal agency on Thursday, Nov. 12.

Three sessions will be held in the Epley Center for Health Professions: 8-9 a.m., noon-1 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. The workshop, sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for Research and Economic Development, is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

This presentation reviews the proposal and review process, including the criteria of intellectual merit and broader impact and describes three funding mechanisms that may be of special interest to the campus community: dissertation improvement grants for doctoral students, CAREER grants for early-career behavioral scientists and research in undergraduate institutions (RUI) grants for faculty.

Elizabeth Lorah, an assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education and Health Professions, invited Hantula to campus. Hantula is an associate professor of psychology and director of the Decision Laboratory at Temple University and associate editor of the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management and editor of The Behavior Analyst. At NSF, he served as a visiting scientist and program director for decision, risk and management sciences.

With an annual budget of $7.3 billion, NSF is the funding source for about 24 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America's colleges and universities.
