University of Arkansas Presents 'Any Given Sunday' at Fine Arts Center Gallery

The University of Arkansas Department of Art is pleased to announce the exhibition Any Given Sunday. The exhibition will be on display from from Nov. 2 to Dec. 8 in the Fine Arts Center Gallery. The Department of Art will host a reception on Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Fine Arts Center Gallery at 3:30 p.m. A lecture by Any Given Sunday artists, Hank Willis Thomas, will be held at Hillside Auditorium, Room 206 at 5:30 p.m. All gallery programming is free and open to the public.

Any Given Sunday explores the role of nostalgia, media, and commerce to comment on society's relationship with sports. Instead of focusing on a singular aspect related to athletics, the exhibition showcases a small group of artists who call attention to sports related imagery as a way to examine cultural topics such as mass media, celebrity, race, and gender. Artists included in the exhibition are Mark Bradford, Craig Drennen, Chie Fueki, Jason Stopa, Hank Willis Thomas, and Wendy White.

The Department of Art at the University of Arkansas provides an intensive environment for committed individuals planning careers as practicing artists and scholars. Students work with 29 faculty members to achieve a formal and technical proficiency within their discipline. In addition, students develop a strong conceptual foundation through research that locates their practice within contemporary and historical art.
