Panel to Explore 'The Evolving Identity of America'

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Personal experience and academic expertise will both be part of the discussion of “The Evolving Identity of America” at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17 in the Willard Walker Hall auditorium.

This Diverse Perspectives program is hosted by the Center for Multicultural and Diversity Education.

The panel approach the discussion of immigration and globalization from the fields of political science, economics, sociology and education, as well as the experience of first- and second-generation Americans.

Charles Robinson, vice chancellor for diversity and community and interim vice provost for student affairs, will make opening remarks and serve as moderator.

Panelists will be:

  • William Schwab, former dean of the Fulbright College, professor of sociology, and author of Right to DREAM
  • Xavier Medina, Diane D. Blair Assistant Professor of Latino Studies in political science
  • Mireya Reith, director of the Arkansas United Community Coalition
  • Zessna Garcia, American Dream Fellow at the Cisneros Center for New Americans
  • Justin Minkel, teacher at Jones Elementary in Springdale and the 2007 Arkansas Teacher of the Year.

The panelists will address a series of introductory questions and will also take questions from the audience.

The Center for Multicultural and Diversity Education facilitates the Diverse Perspectives series to encourage dialogue about timely and relevant multicultural issues, to cultivate diverse community engagement, and to inspire learning about the narrative of diversity and inclusion on the U of A campus and beyond.
