Dos and Don'ts of Commencement: Tips for Graduating Students

As commencement inches closer, some students may still have some lingering questions about the day and what to expect. The guide below provides some quick and dirty tips to ensure graduates have the best day possible.

DO wear comfortable shoes. Students will be standing and walking for extended periods of time and will be required to navigate stairs. Comfortable shoes are a must.

DON'T bring personal items. Items such as coats, purses, flowers and balloons are not allowed in the student lineup area or on the arena floor. Students should make arrangements with their guests or family to take care of their personal items.

DO consider wearing an outfit with pockets. Since bags and purses are not permitted, students may wish to utilize pockets for small items such as phones and keys.

DON'T forget your regalia. Students should arrive at the arena wearing their gown, cap, tassel, cords, stoles and hood (for graduate students). Students may pick up regalia at the University of Arkansas Bookstore.

DO arrive early. Check in begins at 7:30 a.m. and all students are asked to be in line by 8:30 a.m. Students who arrive late will not be able to sit with their degree program, and students who arrive extremely late may not be able to walk across the stage.

DON'T forget to take a bathroom break before the ceremony. The ceremony is projected to last about three hours, and bathroom access will be limited once students are on the commencement floor.

DO make arrangements to meet your guests and family after the ceremony. Things can get hectic once students and guests exit the arena. Determine a meeting location before the ceremony to help make reuniting easier.
