Lunchtime Workshop Provides Tips for Accidental Trainers

ROGERS, Ark. – Professionals can learn to train and develop adults by employing tips given during a lunchtime workshop offered online or in-person Tuesday, Jan. 26, by the Global Campus in Rogers.

Professionals are frequently called upon to train others in formal and informal ways. Some have had formal training in how to train and develop adults; others have not. This session is for those who would benefit from exploring the theories and applications of proven, and emerging, training methodologies, strategies and measurements. This workshop focuses on identifying what different types of learners need and how to measure success in ways that will be meaningful to participants and their organizations.

Participants in the "6 Tips for Accidental Trainers" class can meet face-to-face from noon to 1 p.m. in Suite 402, 3300 Market St., or learn via online simulcast. 

Registration is available online. The cost is $29.

This class is part of the "Lunchtime Workplace 'Tips' Series" offered by the Global Campus. Future classes in this series include "10 Tips for Time Management" on Feb. 16.  

Judith Tavano, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, CPP, is the director of the Professional Development Network at the University of Arkansas Global Campus, the founder of genMatters.com, and a former adjunct instructor in the human resource development program in the College of Education and Health Professions.

"We are all called upon to train someone on something at some time in our careers, but not all of us are trained to do so," Tavano said. "Knowing how to train adults is an art, and this class is designed to shed light on what it takes to do the job right, either face-to-face or online."

As a result of this class, participants will be able to: 

  • Recognize their own learning styles
  • Identify how adult learners learn
  • Understand motivations that drive learning
  • Defend the importance of learning transfer
  • Conduct effective training evaluation
  • Plan how and when to follow up on training

Participants can earn one recertification hour from the Society for Human Resource Management and the Human Resource Certification Institute.
