Dietetics Student Continues Bumpers College Garden Club of America Scholarship Streak

Margaret Craig Cobb, a dietetics student in the Bumpers College, participated in the Mozambique international program community development project.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Margaret Craig Cobb, a dietetics student in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences at the University of Arkansas, has earned a 2015 Garden Club of America Awards scholarship to help fund a study abroad trip.

This is the fourth consecutive year a Bumpers College student has been recognized by the GCA with all four scholarships being awarded in the Summer Environmental Study category for international programs projects.

Cobb participated in the Mozambique community development interdisciplinary service project, which included dietetics, horticulture, agriculture and sustainability. Cobb, who is from Memphis, worked with others at a sustainable poultry business in Nampula, Mozambique.

Cobb is majoring in human nutrition and hospitality innovation in the School of Human Environmental Sciences with a concentration in nutrition and dietetics.

Other recent Bumpers College GCA scholarship recipients include Ashley Rodman in 2014, Julia Allen in 2013 and Douglas Wolf in 2012, all from the Department of Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences.

Rodman, from Elizabeth, Arkansas, also earned a Garden Club of America Awards scholarship and participated in the Mozambique community development program. Rodman, who is now working on a master's degree in crop, soil and environmental sciences, focused on monitoring water quality and building water filters.

Allen and Wolf, both environmental, soil and water science majors from Fayetteville, each received Clara Carter Higgins scholarships from GCA.

Allen participated in the Adelante Abroad Summer Ecology Program in Scotland, focusing on ecology, conservation and habitat management.

Wolf participated in the Ecological Conservation Summer Program at Oatridge University in Edinburgh, Scotland. His project focused on conservation and habitat management.

The GCA is a national leader in horticulture, conservation and civic improvement. It offers 27 merit based scholarships, fellowships and awards in areas of horticulture and related disciplines, botany, native bird habitat, conservation and ecological restoration, desert studies, landscape architecture, urban forestry, garden history and design, coastal wetlands, and pollinator research.

The Bumpers College International Programs Office offers faculty led programs to Mozambique, Belize, Belgium, China, Greece and Italy; courses and exchanges in France, Belgium and the United Kingdom; and internships and research opportunities in India, Brazil, the Philippines, Scotland and Uganda.
