College of Engineering Improves Research Spending, Doctoral Degrees

In the 2017 edition of U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools, the University of Arkansas College of Engineering ranked 112 out of 215 schools. Among engineering programs at public research universities, the college ranked 70. Among several key metrics involved in the calculation of the rankings, the college showed an improvement over the previous year.

In the area of doctoral degrees granted, the College of Engineering rose from 130 to 100. The college also showed improvement in the area of total research expenditures, which rose from 120 to 110, and research expenditures per faculty member, which improved by 14 places, form 140 to 126.

"These improvements are encouraging, and they demonstrate that the emphasis we have recently put on our key metrics is making a difference," said John English, dean of engineering. "I'm confident that our college and programs will continue to be recognized for the quality of our teaching and research. I look forward to seeing even more improvements in the future"

The Department of Chemical Engineering rose eight places in the rankings this year, to 88 out of 131 institutions, with a rank of 55 among chemical engineering programs at public universities. Ranks of other programs are listed below:

• Biological engineering: 20 out of 35 programs, 19 among public institutions
• Civil engineering: 110 out of  159 programs, 79 among public institutions
• Electrical engineering: 109 out of 189 programs, 68 among public institutions
• Industrial engineering: 39 out of 99 programs, 27 among public institutions
• Mechanical engineering: 124 out of 177 programs, 83 among public institutions
